Papua New Guinea Yha Hauka Kopi (Fair Trade)
| Sometimes affectionately called "Waka Jawaka" by coffee vendors, because this coffee is wild and untamed with lots of fruity aromas, a rich earthy character, medium acidity, and full bodied with a malty sweetness. The green coffee is a dense dark green and a bit rustic in the processing, with the beans of different shapes and sizes. This gives the roasted coffee a complexity we think you will like if you are fond of the Ethiopia Harrar. We like giving recognition to the small Papua New Guinean Cooperative of small family farmers by using the name they have chosen for themselves, Yha Hauka Kopi, which means "the fruit of the plant," referring to both coffee cherries and the cooperative's role as a provider for the community. Not only do the Member growers of YHK improve their own lives with funds they receive for their coffee, but they also extend benefits and services such as medical, education, and business services to other members of the community. The coffee roasts well between a medium roast which accentuates the wild complexity and a French roast, which we think is the perfect roast for the PNG YHK. |
