National Organic Homebrew Challenge 2008!
Entry Requirements and Instructions

Download Forms: Entry form Bottle ID form

Entry Requirements:

1. Bottles: 3 (three) bottles for each beer entry must be received.

Bottle size must be between 8 and 22 ounces in volume. All labels must be removed from the bottles and bottles with raised lettering are discouraged. Crown capped and flip top style closures are accepted. All markings on the caps must be completely covered with a permanent black marker. Corked bottles will be accepted with crown cap crimped over the cork. Bottles not meeting these requirements will be disqualified. Bottles will not be returned to the entrants.

Each bottle entered must have the bottle ID form attached with a rubber band. No glue or tape will be accepted- entries submitted with the bottle id tag attached with glue or tape will be disqualified. A different bottle tag of the contestants choosing may be used as long as it contains the following information:

  • Name, address, and phone number of contestant
  • E-mail address of contestant if available
  • Category name & number
  • Subcategory name & letter

The tag should be no larger than 4" x 6" in size. Sorry, no refunds will be given for disqualified entries!

2. Entry forms: Download the entry form, fill it out completely, and include 1 completed form for each entry. It is O. K. to photocopy the forms with pre-entered general info such as name and address, but this contest requires a separate entry form including a specific recipe and ingredient source for each and every entry.

3. $7 entry fee for the 1st entry, $5 for each additional entry from the same brewer: All payments must be included with each entry. Please make checks payable to Seven Bridges Cooperative. Entry fees are not refundable under any circumstances, even if an entry is disqualified.

Credit card payments are accepted for entry fees, with a $12 minimum for credit card charges. Please write credit card number, expiration date, cardholder name, and billing address on a separate piece of paper and indicate how many entries the payment is for. The cardholder name must match the name of at least one of the entrants. 3rd party credit card payments will not be accepted and will cause the entry to be disqualified. If dropping off an entry, payment may be made in person at the retail store counter when the entry is dropped off.

4. Entry Deadlines and Shipping Address/ drop off point:

Entries will be accepted from September 1st through October 10th before 5 pm PST, 2008. Entries can either be
dropped off during regular business hours (Mon- Sat 10 am - 7 pm) or shipped to:

Seven Bridges Cooperative
325A River Street
Santa Cruz, CA 95060

Telephone number to list on the shipping label: 831-454-9665

5. Shipping Guidelines:

We strongly recommend using UPS or Fedex ground to ship your contest entries. It is illegal to ship beer via the US Post office, and we cannot be responsible for entries lost because they were shipped this way.

For safe handling we suggest writing "GLASS-FRAGILE THIS SIDE UP NON-PERISHABLE FOOD" prominently on the outside of the box. Pack entries in a sturdy box. Make sure glass bottles do not touch each other directly. We suggest wrapping each bottle in paper, then in a layer of bubble wrap. Pack a good packing material such as shredded paper, newspaper, or tightly packed peanuts around each bottle. Line the inside of the box with a plastic trash bag in case a bottle breaks or leaks in transit.

All shipping costs are the responsibility of the contest entrant. Entries shipped COD will be refused and will not be entered in the contest.

6. Specific Rules for Organic Entries:

All Ingredients must be certified organic or organically homegrown except yeast and non flavor, non chemical additives. The only non-organic additives allowed are:

  • Burton salts
  • calcium carbonate
  • calcium chloride
  • citric acid
  • gypsum
  • Irish moss
  • lactic acid
  • magnesium sulfate (epsom salts)
  • potassium chloride
  • GMO free yeast*

*The following brands of homebrew yeast are known to be free from GMO's (genetically modified organisms): White Labs, Wyeast, Danstar, and Fermentis (Safeale, Safelager yeast)

Each entry must include an official entry form which includes a recipe that lists the source of each ingredient. Yeast or other ingredients containing GMO's (genetically modified organisms) are not permitted. If an organic ingredient is unknown by the contest committee (comprised of 7 Bridges staff and volunteers) further verification may be required, such as a purchase receipt showing that the item purchased is organically grown.

7. Categories:
Each contestant may enter as many as 15 different beers, but only one entry per category per entrant will be accepted. Multiple entries in the same category by the same contestant will be disqualified!
