2010 National Organic Craft Brew Challenge

The 3rd Annual All Organic Brewing Competition Just For Craft Beers

2010 Craft Brew Entry Period September 1st through October 15th, 2010

An AHA/BJCP Sanctioned Competition

This is a competition where organic pro brewers can compete head to head in a national competition that is professionally judged just for truly organic beers. There are many good reasons to participate in this competition including:

  • To bring recognition to craft brewers who rise to the challenge of brewing commercial organic beers with purely organic hops, malt, adjuncts, and flavors.
  • By promoting truly organic beers this competition also promotes organic agriculture of organic brewing products here in North America and around the world, especially the cultivation of organic hops.
  • To raise the standard of excellence by both brewers and consumers of organic beers.
  • To raise awareness in the beer and brewing communities about the benefits to the environment and human health of organic beverages including beer.

Brewing great organic beer is a true challenge: how to brew popular, tasty beer styles without resorting to conventionally grown malt, hops, or chemical additives. Creative & inspired interpretation of recipes is strongly encouraged because not every ingredient under the sun is available organic. The range of ingredients may be more limited, but with today's choices of fresh, clean, organic ingredients, virtually any style is possible to homebrewers with open minds and creative skills! Brewers who make the choice to brew organic are helping fund a global endeavor to support the huge effort organic hop and malt growers face in cultivating crops commercially and profitably without using a toxic soup of chemicals.

Dates: Entries begin September 1st, 2010. Entry deadline for craft entries is October 15th at 6 pm (homebrew entry deadline is October 9th). Entries received before or after the entry dates will not be entered in the contest.

Contest Judging October 17: Judging for this contest will be held on Sunday October 17 from 10 am to 5 pm. Only judges, volunteers, and Seven Bridges staff will be permitted to attend the judging. Judges for the craft brew competition are carefully selected BJCP registered judges with a rank of National or higher. Location of judging: TBA

Entry Requirements- Craft Brew Division: Entry fee of $50 for the first entry and $35 for each additional entry from the same brewery. A minimum of 48 fl. oz. of beer required per entry. Craft brew entries may be delivered in any container that the brewery wishes, but prior arrangements must be made for return delivery of containers if desired. All craft brew entries must be submitted by a licensed brewery that produces organic or certified organic beer for sale (brewpubs that serve the beer only on tap are not required to be certified organic). All malt, hops, and adjuncts must be verified organically grown. A full recipe is not required to protect the propriety of commercial recipes.

Rules: All Ingredients must be certified organic except yeast and non flavor, non chemical additives. In the United States because certified organic beer does not require certified organic hops, further proof that the hops used are certified organic is required. The only non-organic additives allowed are: Burton salts, calcium carbonate, calcium chloride, citric acid, gypsum, Irish moss, lactic acid, magnesium sulfate, potassium chloride, and yeast. Genetically modified ingredeints are not allowed. Yeast or other ingredients containing GMO's (genetically modified organisms) are not permitted. If an organic ingredient is unknown by the contest committee (comprised of 7 Bridges staff and volunteers) further verification may be required, such as a purchase receipt showing that the item purchased is organically grown. Entries will be judged according to the BJCP Style guidelines which are published here: http://www.bjcp.org/stylecenter.html This contest accepts organic craft brewery entries in every BJCP style category except mead and cider.
