Hearthware
i-Roast 2 Coffee Roaster: $180
The
i-Roast 2, the brand new and updated model
is here! After nearly 2 years on the market,
the i-Roast has proven to be a great roaster
for those home roasting folks who want
more control over the roasting temperatures
but prefer to use a machine. Hearthware
has responded well to customer concerns
about the first model and has made many
design improvements. The most significant
improvement is a memory function which
allows the user to store up to 10 roast
profiles. Also, 5 pre-programmed roast
profiles are included and custom roast
profiles can include up to 5 stages. Other
improvements have been made to the roasting
pot and chaff collector assembly so the
components fit together better and overall
performance is improved.
The
main features of the i-Roast 2:
*Large
batch size of 5- 5.5 oz or one level cup.
Smaller batches are also possible but in
our experience the best results were obtained
with the 1 cup batch size.
*Fast
roast time of 15 minutes or less. Most
roasts are done in about 10 minutes. To
achieve this the i-Roast has a commercial
strength fan and motor, which is very loud.
Think of a loud hair dryer. If noise is
an issue this is not the machine for you!
*Programmable
roast curves, including temperature and
time, for up to 5 stages.
The programming feature was a bit tricky
to learn (sort of like programming a VCR),
but easy enough after doing it a few times.
Note that we also like the easy way to
use this machine: choose a factory pre-set
1 through 5 and stop the roast by hitting
the cool button when the beans are the
color
you
desire. Basically, this machine can satisfy
those who want more control over roast
settings without having to rewire or modify
an appliance, but it is also a great machine
for those who would prefer to push a few
buttons and get a great batch of home roasted
coffee in 10 to 15 minutes.
*Built
in thermometer allows you to monitor the
roaster temperature during the entire roast
cycle at the push of a button.
*A
patented voltage control circuit and alternating
fan and motor velocity during the roast
cycle contribute to consistent results
and even bean color from batch to batch. We
typically roast a blend of 5 different
coffees to serve in
our retail store, and the results have
been consistent. We roast to a full city
or light French roast, and each batch has
been evenly roasted with a lovely oil sheen
on the surface and heavenly aroma after
a decent rest period.
*A
1 year warranty on the base unit.
Included vent hood allows you to attach
a dryer vent to the chaff collector to
allow indoor to outdoor ventilation without
smoke leaking indoors.
1500
watt, 120v/60 Hz. The roaster operates
on standard household current, and comes
with a 1 year manufacturers warranty. Includes
1 lb. organic Fair Trade green coffee.
Upgrade with purchase only: add 4 more
lbs green coffee
for
$16
(a $24 value).

The
Nesco Smokeless Roaster: $149
Formerly
sold as the Zach & Danis roaster, this
is the same great machine with a new name.
This is the perfect home roaster for beginners
and
those who
want
a machine
that will
consistently roast good coffee with very
little monitoring once the roast time has
been established for your favorite beans.
The addition of a catalytic converter removes
most of the roasting smoke, making this
the best roaster for those who do not have
a good ventilation system at home. Other
features we like include a large roast
chamber to roast up to 5.5 oz. of coffee
per session, very even roast, even for
blended coffee, and dishwasher safe removable
parts. This roaster also comes with an
instructional video and comprehensive instruction
booklet.
The
Zach & Danis Roaster is relatively
quiet and has a 15- 30 minute roast cycle.
If you like very dark roasts (espresso),
it will take the full 30 minutes of roasting
time and the batch size should be smaller
(4.5 oz.). Because it has the longest roast
cycle of all the roasting machines we sell,
coffee roasted with the Zach & Danis
roaster will have the rich, deep notes
of a good coffee but may lose some brightness
and acidity that can be achieved with a
faster roast. If you are a home roasting
guru, the ideal is to also own the Freshroast
roaster, roast coffee in both, and blend
the two batches together.
This
roaster has a durable plastic housing,
Aluminum base, tempered glass roasting
chamber, and a zinc auger, and is built
to last. The one component we feel could
be improved is the chaff collector. After
each batch, there is often a large amount
of chaff left behind. This is simply a
nuisance, as it does not affect the coffee
quality in any way, and can easily be removed.
The roaster operates on standard household
110 volt current, and comes with a 6 month
manufacturers warranty. Includes
1 lb. organic Fair Trade green coffee.
Upgrade with purchase only: add 4 more
lbs green coffee
for
$16
(a $24 value).

The
Freshroast Plus 8 Home Coffee Roaster
: $89
This newly improved coffee roaster from Freshbeans,
Inc. features a larger chamber for a 3.5 oz.
roast batch and a fast, quieter roast cycle.
Ideal for a household of 1 to 2 coffee drinkers,
it takes just 3- 5 minutes to roast the coffee
beans with a 2 minute cool-down cycle. The
Freshroast Plus has a mechanical timer and
the chaff collector is simple yet effective.
Because the roast chamber is smaller than other
home coffee roasting machines, and the fan
and motor are smaller, it is more energy efficient
and quieter.
We
really do like this roaster as a simple,
more basic machine that has been, for us,
most reliable. We have a roaster at the shop
that we have used several times a week for
nearly 2 years. This is the roaster that
will outlast all the fancy, computer chip
controlled machines out there. If you are
a serious home coffee roaster, it is worth
having one of these just in case your other
roaster fails, and because brightness of
the coffee it produces.
Because
of the mechanical timer and the fast roast
time, this unit requires a little more attention
to achieve the perfect roast. As the roast
chamber is glass, this is a simple matter
of monitoring the bean color, and aroma and
manually turning the machine to cool when
the beans are perfect. Typically, in a Freshroast
the beans roast a little darker on the outside
and the coffees bright notes and aroma are
accentuated, while deeper tones can sometimes
be muted because of the fast roast time.
The roast time will vary between coffee types,
but exact results can be duplicated by recording
the roast time for each type of coffee you
roast. For a more detailed description of
the roasting process with the Freshroast,
scroll down to the bottom of this web page.
Includes
1 lb. organic Fair Trade green coffee.
Upgrade with purchase only: add 4 more
lbs green coffee
for
$16
(a $24 value).

Roasting
your own coffee with the Fresh Roast Coffee
Roaster is about a 10 minute process:
Fill
the roasting jar with 1/2 cup of green
coffee beans.
Set
the roast selector knob to the desired
setting. Place the unit near a ventilation
hood or fan, our out of doors (the
roasting process will produce some
smoke).
Press
the roast button. The unit will roast
the beans before your eyes. Once the
beans are roasted, the cooling cycle
begins automatically and the unit will
turn itself off when the process is
complete. If you choose to stop the
roasting early, you can override the
heat cycle and begin the cooling process
immediately by turning the knob to
the cool setting. If you want a darker
roast, reset the knob back to the beginning
before the cool cycle begins.
Once
the cooling cycle is complete, you
may remove the fresh roasted coffee
from the unit and brew your coffee
within 24 hours for the optimum freshness
and flavor. It is good to let the coffee
sit for 4- 12 hours after roasting
to allow the beans to de-gas for coffee
perfection.

Bodum
Antigua Burr Mill
Bodum
is a well known manufacturer of quality
household tools and appliences, and
this mill is no exception. This is
the mill we use at the shop to grind
our own coffee. The Antigua burr mill
is a scaled down version of the mills
commonly used in espresso bars and
gourmet cafes around the globe. Instead
of pulverizing and heating the beans
the way a simple blade mill will do,
the burr mill actually cuts the coffee
beans into uniform size pieces rather
than crushing them. A special feature
of this mill are the specially developed
gears that prevent the beans from overheating.
Features
include a built in storage bin that
holds up to a pound of roasted coffee
and a timer-switch to grind any amount
of coffee up to 8 cups at a time. The
grinder can be adjusted from a coarse
French press setting to a fine Italian
espresso setting. Bodum's Antigua takes
all kinds of roasts, from the very
dark oily espressos to the lighter
and dryer roasts of filter coffee.
