Certified
Organic Barley Malt

All
of the malts we sell are certified organic
under the USDA National Organic Program by
California Certified Organic Farmers. No
pesticides, herbicides, or other harmful
chemicals are used in the growing or malting
processes. Organic malts are just like non
organic malts- they can be substituted pound
for pound in most recipes. All grain brewers
take note- some brewers report a higher mash
efficiency when using organic grains instead
of non organic. Store all malts in a cool,
dry environment, preferably in a sealed container,
until use. For best results, do not refrigerate
or freeze as this can cause condensation
inside the package and create mustiness or
mold.
Crushing
Service: We charge 10¢ per
pound to crush bulk grains, and $7 per
bag to crush and repackage full (50- 55
lb.) sacks of malt. We sell our grains
uncrushed (unless otherwise requested)
to supply the freshest product possible.
If crushing is requested we crush the grains
just before shipping in a roller mill specifically
designed to crush malted grains.
Minimum
Order: 1 Lb. of each malt. 1/2 lb.
Bags also available for an additional 20¢ per
bag. If part of a mix of grains packaged
in 1 bag, the minimum amount for each type
of grain is .1 or 1/10 lb. The minimum
quantity for a custom grain mix packaged
in one bag is 2 lbs.
Packaging: We
seal the crushed grain in oxygen barrier
plastic to eliminate the chance of moisture
absorption or mustiness during shipping.
We package each grain type ordered in a separate
bag which will fit up to 18 lbs. You can
request special packing of your grain order
during check-out. For instance, if all of
the grains in your order will be used in
a single brew, you can reduce the amount
of plastic packaging by requesting they all
be packed in one bag instead of separately.
When we package grains in one package we
will also give you our quantity discount
for each grain in the package. Due to the
limitations of our shopping cart software,
grain orders with precise amounts should
be placed by phone or you should give us
clear written instructions during checkout
about how you want the quantities adusted
to suit your recipe
Quantity
Discounts: 2 to 4.9 lbs: 10¢ off
per lb. Over 5 lbs: 20¢ off per lb.
Full Sacks of Grain: 2-3 sacks: 10% Off.
4 or more bags: 15% off (mix and match
OK).

Sometimes used with other dark roasted malts
to achieve desired color. Often used to provide
color without overpowering flavor that is characteristic
of European-style dark beers. May be used with
or without Roasted Barley to brew a Stout with
more color and less intense Roasted Barley flavor
notes. May be used with Chocolate Malt to produce
a Porter with less pronounced chocolate flavor
notes. Black Malt is not interchangeable with
Roasted Barley. Produces dark colored beer with
little impact to foam color. Use when dark beer
with light head is desired.
